Hip Happenings: Cinco de Mayo

May 4, 2017 by Teri Dawson

Cinco de mayo-2

Cinco de Mayo is tomorrow! Do you have plans to celebrate or go out with friends and family?

If you are unfamiliar with the holiday, you may ask yourself what are we celebrating on May 5th? Some people think Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day but this is inaccurate. Cinco de Mayo is actually the day to commemorate the underdog Mexican Army’s victory over the invading French forces led by Napoleon III, at the Battle of Puebla, in Mexico on May 5, 1862.  The Mexican Army had a fraction of the amount of soldiers that the French Army did and the unexpected victory, with relatively few Mexican casualties, really boosted the Mexican morale. This surprising defeat of a very powerful nation called for celebration then and the holiday continues to be celebrated today.

San Antonio is rich in Mexican culture and we can all appreciation great food, great fun and a reason to celebrate with one another. The downtown Market Square area is a great hotspot for Cinco de Mayo festivities. We encourage all of our friends and family to have a great time this upcoming weekend as the warmer weather heats up the city and we at Becker Properties remind you to party responsibly!

Happy Cinco de Mayo to all!

The downtown area is a great place to live, work and party year round! Click the link below to see what available in downtown SA!

Community Matters: BP at NEISD Career Night

April 28, 2017 by Teri Dawson

community matters-4

On Tuesday, April 25, the North East Independent School District hosted their annual career expo for high school and middle students at Blossom Athletic Center. Hundreds of students, parents and businesses were represented at this community wide event. Becker Properties agents Ana Sanchez, Laura Lizcano, Melissa Wertz, Vanessa Jamie, and Ariel Calderon were in attendance. These BP ladies had the opportunity and honor of explaining the ins and outs of a real estate career to young inquiring minds. Discussions included topics such as schooling and credit requirements, licensing fees, continuing education and more. Students were encouraged that successful REALTORS® are self-starters and self-motivated; REALTORS® get to have fun and be creative with marketing, they have the flexibility to make their own schedule, and the privilege of helping people make the dream of homeownership a reality.

Becker Properties agents hope to continue to inspire the youth of San Antonio and the surrounding areas to pursue education and vocational passions. Becker Properties offered free head-shots for students to help them begin building their professional resumes. The event was a lot of fun for all parties and BP plans to continue to support this event and similar events in the future.

Meet Tammy Brewer.

Tammy is a REALTOR with Becker Properties but is also on Staff with BP as the Market Center Manager.  Tammy calls Texas home. She moved to San Antonio with her family at age five and has lived here ever since. Tammy graduated from Clark High School and attended Texas A&M University. Tammy’s faith plays a huge part in her life and before making a career switch to real estate, Tammy served as a youth pastor for Community Bible Church for approximately 13 years. After taking some much needed time off due to illness, Tammy had an opportunity to rearrange some priorities and make a career change; which, she says has been a tremendous blessing in her life.  She reconnected with one of her former YouthQuake students, Philip Becker who was succeeding in Real Estate and quickly became an asset to the Becker Properties Company. Tammy is quiet, reserved and a bit shy, but such a joy to be around and light in the office. Tammy values her family greatly and when she’s not slangin’ real estate or traveling to New York, her second home, she can be found entertaining her nieces and enjoying the company of close friends and family.

Foodie Finds: The Bread Box

March 1, 2017 by Philip Becker

foodie

It’s no secret, we LOVE good food, and there’s s much in this city to enjoy. Join us each week as we highlight a local eatery in search of the best food spots in San Antonio.

Today, for our first entry, we decided to visit The Bread Box on West Bitters Road. The staff at The Bread Box are clearly in sync and on a mission, “Our vision for our restaurant is to provide New American Cuisine that is approachable, delicious and has a great value. At the heart of our menu is bread.”

bread-box-sign-1

About The Bread Box

Tina and Lucas aren’t your typical slices of bread from the everyday loaf. They don’t come from a long line of bakers and they didn’t have a need to bake from a young age. What they did have, was a want to give their kids something better than what the bread aisles of any store could provide; fresh bread with local ingredients and real value.

Tina went to work making bread for her kids’ lunches out of her home kitchen, which sparked an interest in Lucas as a chef. From there, Lucas found he has a knack for bread making and started producing them for the restaurant he was currently working for. From there, other kitchens employed Lucas for his bread making skills via word of mouth, making this duo stand apart from most bakeries. They never went restaurant to restaurant looking for clients, their clients always came to them through recommendation.

Lucas has been doing commercial baking since 2011, supplying the commercial bakery needs of some of San Antonio’s finest food trucks to fine dining and everything in between. In December of 2015 he and Tina opened the doors to their own slice of San Antonio cuisine, The Bread Box.

The Experience

Today I joined one of our REALTORS® for lunch to experience what BP’s Pearce Walker claims to be one of the best burgers in San Antonio. Located in The Shops at Artisan’s Alley, you could easily spend an extra hour and a couple hundred dollars shopping the various boutiques that surround the eatery. The quirky entrance through a side door only adds to the ambiance of items such as egg carton ceiling treatments. Staff was attentive and friendly, seating us quickly in the location of our choice, inside or out. The cafe menu, which sports breakfast and lunch options opening at 8am most days, offers many choices including soups, salads, sandwiches, gourmet desserts and of course tons of baked goods.

bread-box-pastry-case

Lunch consisted of The Bread Box Burger, a 1/2lb short rib and brisket combination topped with fontina cheese, bacon jam, and fresh lettuce and tomato on a brioche bun, served with house chips. I also went for the Mexican bottled Coke which Puro San Antonians no is near impossible to resist. Philip, who joined me, enjoyed a special they had for Ash Wednesday, a Tuna Nicoise Salad sandwich, also with house made chips. The burger was very flavorful and juicy, but that bacon jam though! If I had to find something to quarrel with, it was the patty being so big it barely fit the bun (not an actual complaint). Philip enjoyed the Tuna as well, pointing out the flavors marry well together and the capers set the whole thing off. It’s made with olive oil packed Spanish tuna tossed in a lemon basil vinaigrette with capers, Kalamata olives, tomato, pastured eggs, haricot verts, roasted potatoes and 9-1 Farms arugula. While we were too full from lunch to try dessert, I suggest you budget room to try the lemon bars, fresh PIE OF THE DAY or variety of other pastries, also available to go. Knead-less to say, we’ll be back!
